Hi, I’m Bill: a father, a brother, a friend, and a mental health advocate.
It was more than 30 years ago when I was first diagnosed with schizophrenia. As a young adult, I had no idea how to come to terms with having a mental illness. Why did this have to happen to me? Will I ever be normal again?
After three decades, there’s not much I don’t know about mental illness. I’ve “been there, done that” as they say.
It took me quite a while, but eventually I came to realize my mental illness is a blessing, not a curse. Without it, I couldn’t bring my message of hope to consumers, mental health professionals, parents, and others with an interest in recovery.
If I was never diagnosed with schizophrenia, I couldn’t leave behind a mental health legacy of understanding and support for those going through one of the toughest times in their life.
Here’s what I know: The time following a mental health diagnosis can be confusing, scary, and frustrating. Even though my mother had a mental illness that sent her to the hospital at least once a year when I was a child, it didn’t make my own diagnosis any easier.
That’s why, about 20 years ago, I started travelling throughout North America to share my story and to listen to yours. It’s through these conversations that we can all improve the lives of those affected by mental illness.
My “10 Steps to Recovery” presentation is relevant and insightful for your mental health:
Or I will work with you to create a keynote address or custom presentation on recovery to suit your audience. I also deliver my Christian testimony as it pertains to mental health to church groups.
There’s no charge to book me as a speaker at your conference, church, event, or just to your team (aside from expenses such as travel, accommodations, and meals). That is, unless you’re like the people at my church. They pay me NOT to tell jokes…!
